Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira is the 2018 Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Champion.
Great medal haul for Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira and his students from Brunswick at the 2018 Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
Fantastic day at the 2018 AFBJJ Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship for Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira and his students at Cia Paulista Australia Brunswick – DMD’S MMA, and Martial Spirit.
The 2018 Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship set a record for both competitors and teams this year with a huge registration list, and was held in one day rather than over the weekend as in previous weekends. It was a long competition with over 13 hours of effort.
Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira not only worked as a referee throughout the long day of competition, he also fought and won double Gold in his weight division in the Gi and No-Gi Masters Black Belt Division! Not stopping there, he went on to take home the Silver in the Gi Masters Black Belt Absolute Division after 2 very tough fights, missing out on a Gold in the last few seconds of the final. These results put him at the top of the Masters Black Belt Ranking in Australia (All Weight Divisions) where he is now ranked the #3 No-Gi Masters Black Belt, and the #1 Gi Masters Black Belt throughout the entire Australia! What an amazing achievement!
Professor Marcel, Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Featherweight Champion (Gi and No-Gi)

Laura Tang, Marcel’s student and assistant coach at both Cia Paulista Brunswick – DMD’S MMA and Martial Spirit, also refereed and competed in the event. Laura, who’s had prior experience refereeing in smaller events, was invited to work as a referee in this prestigious and longest running event here in Australia due to a shortage of referees, and was not only the only girl refereeing, but also the youngest!, nevertheless, she conducted herself well and demonstrated great courage in accepting this challenge even though she is only a purple belt. She demonstrated great commitment to the sport by taking this challenge, and showed exemplary conduct dealing with the external pressure of coaches, team supporters and spectators in general. She also competed in the event, going up a weight class in order to fight and earned a bronze medal in the Gi Adult Purple Belt Division. Well-done Laura!

From Cia Paulista – DMD’s MMA, assistant coach Alexandros Tasios did a great job coaching Christopher Cook in his fight in the Gi Adult White Belt Division, and competed in his weight division in the Gi Adult Blue Belt Division. Although they did not win anything this round, it was great to see them there representing the gym.

From Martial Spirit, Ewan Smith did very well in the Gi Adult White Belt Division, bringing home Gold in the Absolute Division!
Also representing Martial Spirit were Ryan Barry, who earned a silver medal in his weight division in the Gi Blue Belt Master Division, Kevin Vargordi, who earned 2 bronze medals in his weight divisions in Gi and No-Gi Masters White Belt Division, and Minh Nguyen who competed in the Gi Adult White Belt Division. Many of the students from Martial Spirit came down to support the team and it was great to see them all there supporting each other and representing the gym! Good job guys!

Well done guys for participating in the competition, and supporting and contributing to the growth of the sport here in Victoria.
