Great medal haul for Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira, Assistant Coach Laura Tang and their students from Brunswick at the 2019 Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
It was a tremendous weekend at the 2019 AFBJJ Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship for Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira, assistant coach Laura Tang, and their students at Cia Paulista Australia Brunswick - DMD’S MMA, and Martial Spirit.
The 2019 Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship was a 2 day long competition, held over the course of a weekend on 6th and 7th April.
Coach Marcel Leteri Sasso de Oliveira not only worked as a referee throughout the long weekend of competition, he also fought and earned a Bronze and a Gold in his weight division in the Gi and No-Gi Masters Black Belt Division respectively.
Marcel fought hard in his Gi division, leading for the duration of his fight due to a penalty awarded to his opponent, but the match ended with a controversial decision by the referee, who awarded his opponent an advantage after the time was up, changing the result of the fight.
Laura Tang, Marcel’s student and assistant coach at both Cia Paulista Brunswick - DMD’S MMA and Martial Spirit, also refereed and competed in the weekend long event.
This is the second time that Laura has been invited to work as a referee in this prestigious event here in Victoria. This year, there were a number of ladies refereeing as part of the new referee apprenticeship program; however, Laura was the only lady working as a referee out of apprenticeship.
On top of a full weekend of refereeing, Laura also competed in the championship, fighting in both the Gi and No-Gi events, where she brought home 4 Gold Medals in the Adult Purple Belt division! In the Gi division, she won the absolute division, fighting a lady over 25kg heavier than her! She also moved up to the heavyweight division in No-Gi, despite it being 5 divisions over her usual division, and just her second time competing in No-Gi so her opponent could have a fight and won! What an amazing achievement, Laura!
From Cia Paulista - DMD’s MMA, Jack Barrile and Joseph 'Joey' Casey both competed in the Adult White Belt Division. Jack took home a Bronze in his weight division in both Gi and No-Gi categories. This was Joey’s first competition experience, and he did remarkably well, winning a Silver medal in his No-Gi weight division. It was great to see them there representing the gym!
From Martial Spirit, Alicia Spurr did very well in the Gi Adult White Belt Division, bringing home a Silver in her weight division, as well as a Gold in the Absolute Division! This is the third year in a row that one of Marcel’s students has won the Gi Adult White Belt Absolute Division at the Victorian State Championships (2017 Gold Medallist, 2018 Gold Medallist). Very well done Alicia!
Alicia, Coach Marcel Leteri’s student at Martial Spirit, won Gold at the 2019 Victorian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the White Belt Adult Open Weight Division.
Many of the students from both Cia Paulista - DMD’s MMA and Martial Spirit came down to support the team and it was great to see them all there supporting each other and representing the gym! Good job guys!

Well done to everyone who participated in the competition, and supported and contributed to the growth of the sport here in Victoria.
